Our Story & Timeline

A Bold Vision. A Relentless Commitment. A Proven Success.
MAS Charter School was founded on a simple yet powerful belief: all students - regardless of background - deserve access to a high-quality, college-preparatory education. In 2012, we opened our doors with just 100 students and 10 staff members, determined to change the trajectory of education for Albuquerque’s most underserved youth.
At MAS, we know that every child can succeed - no matter their race, socioeconomic status, or past educational experiences - when given access to an exceptional education. Achieving this requires more than just great curriculum; it demands a team of dedicated, passionate, and highly effective educators who embrace a “no excuses, whatever it takes” mindset. Our mission goes beyond helping students earn a high school diploma - we ensure they graduate prepared to succeed in college and the competitive world beyond.
While our story is still being written, the milestones we’ve achieved along the way define who we are, what we do, and why it matters - and where we’re headed.
Laying the Foundation (2012-2015)
- August 2012: Mission Achievement and Success (MAS) Charter School is approved by the New Mexico Public Education Commission, launching its first Albuquerque campus — the Yale Campus (1718 Yale Boulevard SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106) — for the 2012-2013 school year. Initially serving grades 6-12, MAS was founded with the vision of expanding over time.
- 2015: Recognizing that 85-90% of incoming students were below grade level, MAS identified the need to intervene earlier in a student’s academic journey. In response, we successfully expanded our charter to include elementary grades, ensuring students developed strong academic foundations from the start.
Expanding Our Reach
(2016-2019)
- Fall 2016: MAS launches its elementary program, starting with grades K-1 and adding a new grade level each year.
- 2018: In partnership with the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) and the Public Education Commission (PEC), MAS applies to launch a PreK program to further expand early education opportunities.
- 2018: MAS opens its second location — the Old Coors Campus (1255 Old Coors Drive SW, Albuquerque, NM 87121) — serving Kindergarten and 1st & 6th grade students during the 2018-2019 school year.
- Fall 2019: MAS welcomes its first 20 preschoolers, officially expanding to serve PreK-12 students at the Yale Campus.
A Game-Changer in Education
(2017-Present)
- 2017-2018: MAS graduates its first senior class, proving the effectiveness of its college-preparatory model.
- 2019-2020: The Old Coors Campus expands to serve PreK through 6th grade students.
- 2021-2022: The Old Coors Campus extends to accommodate PreK through 7th grade.
- 2022-2023: The Old Coors Campus expands again, now serving PreK through 8th grade.
- 2023-2024: The Old Coors Campus continues its growth, adding 9th grade and officially becoming a PreK-9 campus.
- Today: MAS serves more than 2,200 students across two campuses, employing more than 200 educators, support staff, and school leaders, and remains one of the only college-preparatory K-12 schools in New Mexico.
