Choose Love at MAS Charter School

A School Community Rooted in Courage, Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Compassion

MAS Charter School is proud to be one of the first-ever Choose Love Certified Schools in the United States - and one of only seven nationwide and the only certified school in New Mexico. This designation reflects our deep commitment to social emotional learning (SEL), student growth and development, and creating a school culture where every student feels safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.

At MAS, the Choose Love Movement isn’t just a program - it’s woven into everything we do. From our classrooms to our hallways, from student interactions to leadership decisions, we embrace Choose Love’s four core pillars of Courage, Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Compassion in Action to help our students develop resilience, emotional intelligence, and a strong sense of community.

What is the Choose Love Movement?

The Choose Love Movement is a nationally recognized social emotional learning (SEL) framework founded by Scarlett Lewis, whose son, Jesse, was tragically lost in the Sandy Hook school shooting. This research-backed approach teaches students and educators how to:

  • Manage emotions effectively
  • Make responsible decisions
  • Build strong, healthy relationships
  • Develop confidence and leadership skills
  • Create a culture of kindness and inclusion

Through daily SEL lessons, schoolwide initiatives, and staff training, MAS students learn how to choose love in every situation, leading to improved academic performance, better conflict resolution, and a more positive, emotionally safe learning environment.

courage

Students learn to face challenges head-on, stand up for what’s right, and develop the inner strength to persevere through difficulties. Courage at MAS means taking academic risks, speaking up, and showing integrity in all situations.

Gratitude

Gratitude shifts our mindset toward positivity, appreciation, and resilience. At MAS, we encourage students to recognize and express gratitude daily, creating a culture of respect and acknowledgment for others.

Forgiveness

Conflict is a part of life, but learning how to forgive and move forward is an important life skill. At MAS, students practice self-reflection, empathy, and letting go of past negativity, allowing them to grow emotionally and strengthen relationships.

Compassion in Action

At MAS, kindness isn’t just a concept — it’s an action! Our students are taught to actively care for others, whether through peer mentorship or daily interactions that foster inclusion and support.

Why Choose Love at MAS?

Being a Choose Love Certified School means MAS students receive more than just an education; they receive the tools to lead grounded, meaningful, and emotionally successful lives. The Choose Love approach has been proven to:

  • Improve academic success by reducing anxiety and increasing focus.
  • Strengthen relationships by teaching empathy, communication, and conflict resolution.
  • Create a safer, more positive school culture where bullying and negative behaviors are reduced.
  • Prepare students for the real world by fostering emotional intelligence, resilience, and leadership skills.
