Elementary School FAQ
Q: How large are the classes in MAS’s elementary program?
A: Each elementary class has approximately 30 students, but nearly all Kindergarten through 3rd grade classrooms are co-taught. This means there are two full-time, licensed educators in each classroom, ensuring personalized instruction and greater student support.
Q: How long is the school day?
The MAS school day runs from 8:20 a.m. to 4:20 p.m., the same schedule as our middle and high school students. While this is a longer day than many traditional elementary schools, we know that more time in school means more learning opportunities - especially in reading and math, where early mastery is critical for future college success.
Q: Do young students get naptime?
MAS elementary students do not have naptime. While our school day is longer than most, students quickly adjust to the structured, engaging environment, and our schedule ensures they remain active and focused throughout the day.
Q: Do students receive a snack?
Yes! All MAS students receive a free afternoon snack every day to help keep them energized and focused on learning.
Q: What is recess like at MAS?
Instead of traditional recess, elementary students (Kindergarten thru grade 6) participate in daily 90-minute physical education (PE) classes. This provides an appropriate outlet for releasing energy while also helping students develop teamwork, motor skills, and socialization skills through structured activities and games.
Q: Is before school and afterschool care available?
Yes! MAS offers a free before and afterschool program for all students at both campuses. These programs provide:
- Supervised educational play for elementary students.
- Organized sports and structured activities for older students.
Q: Does MAS provide bus transportation?
Yes, MAS provides limited public school transportation for students.
- A bus schedule with stops and times is available in the main office and here on our website.
- All grade levels ride the bus together, but elementary students sit separately at the front of the buses.
- A staff member meets the bus each afternoon to ensure students are picked up by a parent or accompanied by an older sibling.
Q: What is it like to be a student at MAS?
MAS has a structured, high-energy, and academically driven culture that values every opportunity to learn. From the moment students arrive in the morning to the end of the day, we have structured routines that help maximize instructional time.
While structure is important, we also believe that learning should be fun and engaging. Our teachers nurture and challenge students daily, making MAS a place where children love to learn and would come to school every day — even if they didn’t have to!
