HeartMath at MAS: Strengthening Emotional Learning

Innovative Tools for a Healthier, More Resilient Learning Environment

MAS Charter School is proud to be one of the first schools in New Mexico to introduce HeartMath - a groundbreaking approach to stress management, emotional regulation, and cognitive focus.

Through science-backed techniques and biofeedback technology, HeartMath helps students understand and control their emotional state, leading to improved learning, behavior, and overall well-being.

Now, MAS is taking our commitment to emotional resilience a step further.

We are planning to be part of a national HeartMath research study for the 2025-2026 school year!

MAS is one of just 31 schools in the country selected to participate in this study, which will specifically focus on high school students. This partnership allows MAS to contribute to cutting-edge research on the impact of heart-brain coherence techniques in education, while giving our students access to some of the most advanced emotional regulation tools available today.

What is HeartMath?

HeartMath is a research-based system that teaches students how to balance their emotions and thoughts to create a coherent heart-brain connection. Using simple yet powerful techniques, students learn how to:

  • Manage stress and anxiety in real time
  • Improve focus and concentration for better academic performance
  • Strengthen emotional resilience when faced with challenges
  • Boost self-awareness and self-regulation skills
  • Create a calmer, more positive school environment

At MAS, we believe that helping students develop emotional intelligence is just as important as academic success. That’s why we are currently piloting HeartMath in select grade levels, ensuring that students gain these essential life skills early on.

How: HeartMath at MAS

Through fun, interactive techniques and real-time biofeedback tools, MAS students are able to see firsthand how their emotions impact their heart-brain connection.

HeartMath Techniques We Teach:

Heart-Focused Breathing™: A simple breathing technique that helps students shift into a calm, focused state.

Biofeedback Technology: Students use HeartMath tools to visualize their heart rate variability (HRV) and learn how to regulate emotions in real time.

Emotional Self-Regulation Strategies: Techniques that help students reduce frustration, stay present, and build resilience in both academic and personal settings.

By practicing these skills regularly, students gain a lifelong ability to manage stress, stay motivated, and make better decisions.

Why HeartMath Matters

At MAS Charter School, we’re on a mission to empower students to discover who they are, what they want to do, and why it matters by delivering a rigorous college preparatory program in a supportive and engaging learning environment. In order to deliver on that mission, we equip students with the tools they need to navigate challenges, build resilience, and develop the emotional intelligence necessary for success in school and beyond.

And that’s why HeartMath matters. Because…

  • Students who can manage their emotions learn better. Research shows that students in high-coherence states (calm, balanced, and focused) retain information more effectively and perform better in school.

  • HeartMath empowers students to take control of their emotions. Instead of reacting impulsively to stress or frustration, students learn to pause, breathe, and reset.

  • A positive school culture starts with emotional intelligence. By helping students regulate their emotions, we create a more supportive, respectful, and engaged learning environment for everyone.

The Future of HeartMath at MAS

Currently, we are piloting HeartMath in select grade levels, with plans to expand based on student success and feedback. With our anticipated participation in the national HeartMath research study, MAS is at the forefront of integrating social-emotional learning with cutting-edge science.
