Middle school is a pivotal time in a student’s academic journey, and at MAS Charter School, we ensure that every middle student (grades 5 through 8) is challenged, supported, and prepared for the road ahead. Our middle school program is designed to foster critical thinking, independence, emotional intelligence, and academic mastery while laying the foundation for high school and college success.

At MAS, middle school students receive significantly more instructional time in core subjects than at traditional schools. This means more time developing strong reading and writing skills, mastering complex math concepts, and engaging in hands-on science exploration - all in a structured and high-expectations environment where students thrive.

  • Grades 5-6: Students receive one 90-minute English Language Arts (ELA) block daily, developing comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.
  • Grades 7-8: Literacy instruction expands to two 90-minute ELA blocks daily, ensuring students are fully prepared for the demands of high school and beyond.
  • Independent Reading Focus: Students read books of their choice within their reading range, encouraging a lifelong love of reading while strengthening comprehension.

 

Mathematics: Developing Strong Problem-Solvers

Middle school math at MAS goes beyond memorization. We teach students how to think mathematically and solve complex problems.

Dual Math Instruction means every student takes one math class per day:

  • Students focus on core math instruction, aligned with rigorous national standards.

Conceptual Understanding & Fluency: We emphasize problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and connections across concepts.

Real-World Applications: Students use math in practical ways, preparing them for advanced coursework in high school.

 

Social Studies: Understanding the World

  • Physical Education (PE): Students in 5th and 6th grade have PE every other day, developing teamwork, coordination, and lifelong fitness habits.
