Educator Spotlight — Ms. Maria Cristy Melgar, 3rd Grade Test Prep Teacher

  • Meet The Team
Mikal Belicove

Our latest educator spotlight marks the beginning of a special series honoring MAS educators whose time with us is coming to a close as their J-1 visas expire, requiring them to return to their home countries. First up is a passionate teacher from the Philippines who has left a lasting impact on her students, colleagues, and school community. Meet Maria Cristy, our 2023 Old Coors Campus Teacher of The Year, in her own words…

MAS: What has your role at MAS been during your time here?

MS. MELGAR: I’ve had the privilege of serving as a 3rd Grade Test Prep Teacher, and I’ve also spent time teaching Reading Mastery. It’s the only position I’ve held at MAS, and it has been incredibly meaningful.

MAS: You’ve made a big difference during your time here. What’s one of your favorite memories from your years at MAS?

MS. MELGAR: I will never forget the joy on my students’ faces as they transformed into readers. In Reading Mastery, I watched students go from struggling to decode simple words to becoming confident, independent readers. That “I can read” moment is priceless. As a Test Prep teacher, it’s been so rewarding to see students overcome challenges, grow their skills, and celebrate their progress.

MAS: You’re returning to the Philippines soon. What are your plans once you arrive home?

MS. MELGAR: First, I plan to finish my Doctorate Degree. I’ll return to the classroom and continue doing what I love — teaching — while sharing everything I’ve learned during my time in the U.S.

MAS: What are you most excited to do when you get back home?

MS. MELGAR: I can’t wait to spend time with my family, reconnect with old friends, enjoy my favorite Filipino dishes, and revisit some of our local historical spots. The warmth and culture of home is something I’ve really missed.

MAS: Do you see yourself returning to the U.S. one day?

MS. MELGAR: Yes! After completing the two-year home residency requirement, I definitely plan to return. Whether to work or visit, I would love to continue my journey here.

MAS: You mentioned traveling during your time in the U.S. Do you have any favorite destinations?

MS. MELGAR: I was fortunate to explore several cities and states, but San Francisco was my favorite. Seeing the Golden Gate Bridge was a dream come true.

MAS: What advice would you give to other international educators coming to teach in the U.S.?

MS. MELGAR: Come with a strong heart and a clear purpose. Teaching in a new country will challenge and transform you. Embrace the journey with passion, dedication, and resilience because it’s an incredible opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.

MAS: As you say goodbye, what will you miss most?

MS. MELGAR: I’ll miss the diversity of cultures and the beauty of the places I visited in the U.S. But most of all, I’ll miss the supportive team, the students who inspired me daily, and the high expectations that pushed me to grow into the best version of myself as a teacher at MAS.
