For Adolfo Guzman, high school reinforced the value of hard work and steady effort. After enrolling at Mission Achievement and Success (MAS) Charter School in the fall of 2019 as a sixth grader, he spent the following years building the habits that now shape his plans for the future, including a career in construction.

Soccer played an important role in that growth. More than just kicking a ball around, Adolfo says playing for the MAS Bulls helped him become a disciplined team player while strengthening his communication skills. It also gave him experiences that contributed to his personal growth in lasting ways.

When Adolfo reflects on what he liked best about attending MAS, he points to both the support he received and the opportunities the school provided.

“What I liked best about attending MAS was the opportunity to take dual college credit courses and leave early, which allowed me to focus on my Central New Mexico Community College classes and other important commitments.”

He also appreciated the helpful and caring teachers who made his classes enjoyable and supportive.

Adolfo’s advice to incoming freshmen is grounded in the lessons he learned during his own high school journey. “Based on my experiences, I would advise incoming freshmen to work hard, stay focused on their education, and never give up despite challenges.” He also encourages students to ask questions when they need help and to choose their friends wisely, because the right people can support them throughout high school.

Outside of school, Adolfo enjoys drawing and skateboarding, along with continuing to play soccer. He says these activities have helped him develop discipline and teamwork while also teaching patience with himself and others. They have also strengthened his communication skills.

One of the most important life lessons Adolfo says he learned in high school is the importance of working hard and putting in consistent effort to reach his goals.

Reflecting on that lesson, he said, “Throughout high school, I learned the importance of working hard and putting in consistent effort to achieve my goals, as well as persevering when faced with challenges.”

After high school, Adolfo plans to attend New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, where he will major in computer science. Looking 10 years ahead, living in Colorado or Los Angeles is tops on his list, as is exploring national parks across the United States. He also plans to own a construction company and enjoy the comfort of a home of his own.

Within his family, Adolfo says he most admires his eldest brother. “He has always been a father figure to me, consistently offering support and guidance whenever I need it.” That example has clearly stayed with him as he plans the future he wants to build.

As for his favorite local meal when eating out, Adolfo points to Crackin’ Crab Seafood Boil. When he goes there, he usually orders the crab legs with corn.

With support like that offered by family, friends and educators, we’re certain Adolfo will succeed at whatever challenges he sets his mind to conquer. We here at MAS are  impressed by his progress to date, and we can’t wait to see what’s next in his life.
