MAS Class of 2026 Senior Spotlight: Afirstian Ayala

  • Class of 2026
Mikal Belicove

Afirstian Ayala already has a clear path in mind as graduation approaches. After spending his middle school and high school years at Mission Achievement and Success Charter School, he plans to take the next step by joining the United States Air Force.

Afirstian hopes to become an aviation loadmaster. In that role, he would be responsible for loading, securing, and unloading cargo and passengers on transport aircraft. The position also includes calculating weight and balance while monitoring cargo safety during flight. Loadmasters may also oversee airdrop operations. For Afirstian, the Air Force represents a career opportunity and a chance to travel and experience new places.

When reflecting on his time at MAS, Afirstian says the best part has been the people he met along the way, including both teachers and fellow students. “They’ve supported and challenged me,” he said. “They also helped me build skills that shaped me into a better person.”

He also credits MAS teachers for helping him understand course material and for supporting him through challenges. Afirstian appreciated the opportunity to participate in the dual credit program, which allows students to earn college credits while still in high school. He says one of the most important lessons he learned during his time at MAS is the value of perseverance. “No matter what I am doing or the challenges I face, it’s important to stay focused and keep going,” he said.

For incoming freshmen, Afirstian offers simple advice. Stay focused on your studies, avoid distractions, and maintain good attendance because it supports success at school. He also encourages students to speak up and ask questions when they need help. “That’s how you get the support you need to succeed,” he said.

Outside of school, Afirstian enjoys spending time with friends and playing football. He also values time with his parents and siblings. Hiking and exploring nature are activities he especially enjoys, and he often relaxes by playing video games. He says these experiences helped him develop teamwork and communication skills while also teaching patience and problem solving.

Afirstian says the person he admires most is his grandfather. He describes him as hardworking and always willing to make time for others. “Whenever I face challenges, he is there to guide me and help me get back on track,” Afirstian said. “I truly admire and appreciate him for that.”

When it comes to food, Afirstian’s favorite restaurant is Basil Leaf Vietnamese Restaurant, located at 1225 Eubank Blvd NE; Albuquerque, NM 87112. When he visits, he likes to order pho, a traditional noodle soup that he describes as absolutely delicious. With his sights set on the United States Air Force, Afirstian looks forward to the opportunities and experiences that await him after graduation.
