For graduating senior Arian Cruz, “Truckin’” means more than just a Grateful Dead song from the early 1970s. The Mission Achievement and Success Charter School senior has his sights set on owning his own trucking company within the next decade.

But first on his “to do list,” Arian has plans to attend The University of New Mexico, where he’ll pursue a bachelor’s degree in business management and, possibly later, earn his MBA.

In addition to running a fleet of trucks, Arian envisions building his own home, starting a family, and make enough money to help his parents retire comfortably. “For my future goals, I hope to apply everything I’ve learned in high school to stay motivated and focused, achieve all my aspirations, and make my parents proud.”

And this seven-year MAS student credits his high school for such lofty goals. “I love that MAS prepares us for real life after high school and gives us the chance to attend college classes, which will help us in the future,” Arian says.

“I also really appreciate the school leaders, who are caring, fair, and always there for us when we need support. What I’ve learned is that it’s important to always be yourself, stay true to your values, and not give in to negative influences. Being authentic helps you make better decisions and build confidence in who you are.”

When asked what advice he has for incoming freshmen, Arian says that, based on his experiences at MAS, he would tell incoming freshmen that everyone’s high school experience is different, making it important to stay focused and not be afraid to ask for help when needed. “It’s okay to make mistakes, but what matters most is learning from them and striving to improve.”

Arian was a member of the soccer team at MAS, which he says helped him build confidence and improve his social skills while interacting and working closely with his teammates. Outside of school, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, playing soccer, listening to music, and going for drives.

“These activities help me build strong relationships, stay active, relieve stress, and develop a sense of balance in my life.”

Arian credits his parents for much of his success, especially his mother for her encouragement when he faced challenges in school, as well as his dad’s constant reminder to him that there’s a light at the end of every tunnel. “Their support and guidance have shaped me into the person I am today,” he says.

When asked about his favorite restaurant, Arian points directly to the Texas Roadhouse, where he usually order the ribeye steak with loaded mashed potatoes. Never a disappointment. "It’s always delicious and satisfying," he says.

Thank you, Arian, for sharing some of the remarkable highlights of your MAS experience, along with your future plans. We have no doubt that the light you’ve generated so far will continue to shine down the road.
