Ashley Matzir can picture a future that starts in the kitchen and grows into something bigger. Ten years from now, she sees herself running her own business as a chef, building a home life she loves, and expanding to new locations as her goals take shape.

Ashley enrolled at Mission Achievement and Success Charter School (MAS) in the fall of 2021 as an 8th grader. When she reflects on what she valued most about her time at MAS, she points to the mix of support and opportunity she found there.

“What I liked best about attending MAS was the opportunity to take CNM classes while still in high school, the encouragement from teachers to work hard and achieve good grades, and the enjoyment I got from Physical Education classes.”

Ashley also appreciated the chance to earn college credit while still in high school through MAS’s dual credit offerings with Central New Mexico Community College. Along with that academic experience, she stayed active by playing both basketball and soccer for the Bulls. She says those sports helped her stay in shape and support her physical health. She also credits them with building teamwork skills and discipline.

When it comes to advice for incoming freshmen, Ashley keeps it simple and direct.

“I would advise incoming freshmen to never give up, because even though things may get difficult at times, it will get better with perseverance and effort.”

Ashley says one of the most important lessons she learned in high school is the importance of patience. She also learned to value herself and make responsible decisions, with an understanding that choices come with consequences.

After high school, Ashley will attend The University of New Mexico. She also plans to apply the skills she learned in her Central New Mexico Community College math classes as she works in her father’s business.

Outside of school, Ashley enjoys cooking and spending time with family and friends. She also makes time for self-care by maintaining her nails, makeup, and hair. When she wants to relax, Ashley turns to video games as another way to recharge.

When she is eating out, Ashley’s favorite local restaurant is Himawari Ramen at 505 Central Ave., where she especially enjoys the Miso Ramen. She shared that her father worked there when she was a child, and the dish has remained a special favorite.

Ashley says she admires her father because of the example he set through hard work and persistence. She also admires her mother for her patience and devotion to their family, which Ashley says continues to guide her.

“I am grateful to MAS for the support it provided to students, and I’m happy to have made great friends along the way. I’ve shared many fun moments and truly appreciate the time I spent with my teachers, especially Mr. Haynes, who always encouraged me to stay motivated, and Mrs. Romero, one of our College and Career Readiness Counselors, who always greeted us with patience and a smile, even when she had a lot of work.”

Ashley moves on from high school with a clear plan and a strong sense of what she wants to build. With college ahead and long-term goals already taking shape, she leaves MAS ready for the work and growth that come next.
