Identifying your priorities can shape the future, and that lesson has stayed with Dulce Diaz throughout her time at Mission Achievement and Success Charter School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After enrolling as a 6th grader in the Fall of 2019, Dulce spent the years that followed discover who she is, building confidence in herself, and preparing for the things she plans to pursue after graduation.

For Dulce, one of the most valuable parts of attending MAS was the chance to take college classes while still in high school. That dual credit opportunity gave her a head start for college and helped her feel more prepared for what comes next. Reflecting on that experience, Dulce shared, “I love that MAS has prepared me for the future by giving me the opportunity to take classes at Central Community College of New Mexico (CNM), which gives me an advantage when I officially start college.”

Although Dulce did not participate in school extracurricular activities, she found meaningful ways to relax and recharge outside the classroom. She enjoys driving and coloring. She also likes shopping and watching movies, and she makes time for self-care, something MAS encourages through its approach to social-emotional learning. Dulce says these activities help her feel more confident and balanced in her daily life.

When asked what advice she would offer to incoming freshmen, Dulce encourages new students to enjoy high school while still taking it seriously. She understands that time moves quickly and that students should stay grounded in who they are. As she put it:

“I would tell incoming freshmen to have fun but also take school seriously because time goes by quickly.” She also encourages freshmen to believe in themselves and stay true to who they are.

One of the most important life lessons Dulce says she learned in high school is the importance of knowing her priorities and working hard for them. She understands that success does not simply appear on its own and that dedication matters.

“I’ve learned that it’s important to know your priorities and work hard for them because nothing in life is simply handed to you.”

After high school, Dulce will continue her studies at CNM, where she plans to train as a diagnostic medical sonographer. Looking 10 years ahead, she sees herself working in that field, providing for herself, and owning her own home. She also plans to build financial independence and have the freedom to travel and experience new cultures.

Dulce says she admires her parents because of the sacrifices they have made for her. She also admires her sister for always helping and supporting her. In addition, Dulce shared that she is grateful to God for blessing her, providing for her, and making it possible for her to be where she is today.

When it comes to food, Dulce has a favorite local restaurant. She enjoys LongHorn Steakhouse, where she usually orders steak with a stuffed potato. It is a meal she describes as absolutely delicious.

Dulce’s time at MAS reflects focus and a clear sense of direction. Those qualities will continue to guide her as she moves into college and the future she has planned for herself.
