Estevan Munoz’s creativity and positive presence have stood out during his time at Mission Achievement and Success Charter School. For instance, in 11th grade, he was recognized as a Yale Campus Student of the Week, with staff noting his positive attitude, willingness to volunteer, and consistent follow-through.

Estevan enrolled at MAS in the fall of 2021, and he says the relationships he built at school made a lasting impact on his daily experience.

“What I liked best about attending MAS was the relationships I built with my teachers and peers, which made me look forward to coming to school every day.”

Outside of school, Estevan spends time in creative activities that bring him comfort and help him express himself. He enjoys writing songs and stories, along with drawing. He says these interests make him happy and help him relax while giving him space to share his ideas, which isn’t surprising given what he’s chosen to study in college.

Estevan also enjoys playing video games and cooking. He says these hobbies support his personal creative growth by helping him learn new skills and unwind when life feels busy.

When he offers advice to incoming freshmen, Estevan emphasizes both well-being and focus.

“I would advise incoming freshmen to put themselves first, take care of their well-being, and be mentally prepared to face challenges with confidence. It’s important to make friends along the way, but most importantly, stay focused on your academics, because neglecting them can have serious consequences.”

Estevan says one of the most important lessons he learned in high school is to take academics seriously and stay confident. He also learned to focus on the positive parts of life rather than the negative, a mindset that helps him keep perspective when challenges show up.

After high school, Estevan plans to attend The University of New Mexico, where he will major in either art or music. He says these paths connect to his passion for creativity and self-expression. Looking 10 years ahead, Estevan plans to find success as an artist, experience living in a different country, and have several pets, along with adopt children.

Estevan says he admires his sister because he has always looked up to her. He describes her as genuine and selfless, and he respects the example she sets through the way she treats others.

When he is dining out, Estevan’s favorite restaurant is The Melting Pot (2201 Uptown Loop Road NE; Albuquerque, NM 87110). He especially enjoys ordering dishes with teriyaki, and he says the overall dining experience makes it a place he truly enjoys.

Estevan also shared how much the people closest to him have shaped his journey.

"I wouldn’t be where I am today without the incredible support of my family and friends. Every day, I remind myself of everything they have sacrificed for me, and I use that as motivation to keep moving forward.”

Estevan’s story reflects creativity and steady growth, along with sincere gratitude for the people who have supported him. We’re confident those qualities will continue to guide him as he moves onto college and the future he envisions for himself.
