With plans to play basketball internationally as a professional, graduating senior Jolean Espanola credits his Mission Achievement and Success (MAS) Charter School team with helping him improve his decision-making both on and off the court. His growth was also recognized through Student of the Week honors in both 11th and 12th grade, along with a Student of the Month distinction during his junior year.

“Being part of a team also taught me the value of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance,” he said, adding that his high school years helped him build friendships and feel part of a supportive community.

“What I liked best about attending MAS was the thoughtful planning and programs, all designed to support students’ cognitive development and overall growth.”

Jolean says he learned that one of the most important aspects of life is the people you meet along the way. “They can influence the choices you make and ultimately affect your happiness and overall quality of life.”

He applies that same experience in his advice to new students arriving at MAS, suggesting to them that success comes from momentum and consistency. He urges incoming freshmen to, “Keep moving forward, stay focused on your goals, and don’t let setbacks stop you from making progress.”

And Jolean plans to take his own advice as the attends San Pedro College in the Philippines, where he will major in nursing. “At the same time, I hope to continue playing basketball, with the goal of eventually pursuing it professionally.”

“MAS has helped me grow into a strong student by giving me the opportunity to take dual college credit courses while in high school,” which he says provide a head start toward earning an associate’s degree from Central New Mexico Community College.

Over the next 10 years, Jolean envisions traveling to countries in Asia, playing basketball, and pursuing music part-time.

“I hope to explore new places to gain experience and learn about different cultures,” he says.

Meanwhile, he says he loves music and enjoys playing the guitar, along with playing video games in his free time. “Playing the guitar helps me build my skills and boosts my confidence, because I can see myself improving with practice. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and personal growth.”

As you might imagine, Jolean points to his parents for their tremendous support and guidance.“My mother has an unending will to provide and care for us, while my father is a supporter, provider, role model, and protector for my sibling and me,” he said. “Together, they motivate us and make sure we can enjoy a good quality of life, and I am deeply grateful for their guidance and support.”

Basil Leaf is his favorite local eatery, where he especially enjoys the steak and the mango shake, the latter of which he describes as having “a rich, natural flavor.”

As Jolean moves on from MAS in May with gratitude for the people who helped shape his journey, he will turn toward preparing for nursing studies in the Philippines while continuing to pursue basketball. We are deeply impressed by all he has accomplished and excited to see where his path takes him next.
