For graduating senior Jose Carrera Trillo, his experiences at Mission Achievement and Success Charter School were a lot like receiving the keys to the kingdom. “What I loved most about attending MAS were the many opportunities provided to students,” he says. He credits the school’s College and Career Readiness Counselors for helping him explore colleges and universities as his next step after high school.

He also appreciates the guidance he received while exploring the school’s dual college credit program, along with the driver’s education program that prepared him to become a responsible driver. “This experience also taught me patience and focus, as well as the importance of following rules.”

Adding to Jose’s high school experience were friends whom he says love him for who is, supporting him through typical issues and obstacles, and encouraged him to be authentic in his thoughts, feelings, and actions. “I’ve learned that it’s important not to be overly concerned with other people’s opinions.”

Instead, he is focusing on self-improvement and working toward his own goals, which he says leads to growth and success. “Over time,” he adds, “I hope to continue embracing other aspects of myself, including my unique talents, interests, and abilities.”

When it comes to offering sage advice for incoming MAS students, Jose suggests that they pay attention to the social-emotional (SEL) lessons, like Choose Love, which he says were beneficial to him. “These lessons will positively change their perspective and help improve the quality of their relationships with others.”

As for his post-high school plans, this member of the Class of 2026 plans to attend New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM, where he’ll study film. “I hope to gain the skills and experience needed to pursue a career in the film industry,” he says.

After college, he wants to become a cinematographer. He also hopes to travel extensively and learn about new cultures, take up archery, and maybe own a pet bird.

Jose credits his mother for helping him find ways to overcome life’s challenges and inspiring him to work hard, pursue his goals, and strive for a good quality of life.

When he goes out to grab a bite to eat, Jose’s favorite restaurant is Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, where he always orders their Double Steak Burger. “Going there also reminds me of my childhood, because my great-grandmother used to take me there, and I cherish those special moments with her.
