Karina Rios Loera still remembers the nerves she felt during her freshman year of high school, especially as she faced growing up and the changes ahead. After enrolling at Mission Achievement and Success Charter School as a 5th grader in fall 2018, Karina gradually realized how much the journey would teach her about life and about who she was becoming.

Karina says the parts of MAS she valued most were the teachers and the school’s focus on preparing students for college

“The teachers are approachable and very supportive, which makes learning more meaningful. I also appreciated the opportunity to take college classes while still in high school, as it helped me prepare for what’s next.”

After high school, Karina plans to attend The University of New Mexico (UNM) and major in criminology. Looking 10 years ahead, she plans to work for the FBI. She also sees herself owning a home and eventually starting a family of her own.

Cheerleading played an important role in her high school experience. As a member of the MAS cheerleading squad, Karina says she learned perseverance during challenging moments and gained experience working with different personalities. Being part of the squad also pushed her to step outside her comfort zone and grow in confidence.

Karina says her years in high school also shaped how she thinks about goals and relationships. She learned the importance of focusing on her own goals rather than worrying about what others think. She also learned to let go of relationships that do not have a positive influence, and she says she became better at managing her emotions.

Her advice to incoming freshmen reflects that same mindset.

“I would advise freshmen to stay focused on their education and set goals they can work toward. Don’t allow others to bring you down, and remember that friendships may change over time. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own growth and success, so believe in yourself and stay motivated.”

Outside of school, Karina enjoys singing and dancing. Spending time with friends is also important to her, and she also likes going to the gym. She says these activities helped her discover interests, support a positive mindset, and stay physically healthy.

Chick-fil-A is her favorite restaurant in town. Karina usually orders the 12-piece chicken nuggets with a large fry. She also gets Chick-fil-A sauce and an iced tea.

Karina says she admires her parents because they continue working hard for their family, even when life is difficult. She says their dedication and perseverance inspire her, and she wants to give back to them and make them proud.

As she looks back on her time at MAS, Karina says she is leaving with pride and motivation for what comes next.

“I am proud to be part of the Class of 2026 and excited to receive my diploma as I move forward to pursue my dream of joining the FBI.”

Karina leaves high school with clear plans and a steady sense of motivation. The MAS community is excited to see her take the next step at UNM and continue working toward the career she has set her sights on.
