Video editing and production have become popular creative outlets for many young people. For Malik Reese, who earned an 11th grade Student of The Week honor back in May of 2025, that interest has shaped a clear plan for what comes next. After high school graduation, he plans to attend The University of New Mexico to study film as he works toward becoming a professional film editor.

Malik enrolled in fall 2018 as a 5th grader, making him one of a handful of Class of 2026 graduates with the longest tenure at MAS. When he reflects on what he liked best about attending MAS, he points first to the people.

“What I liked best about attending MAS is the people, my classmates are interesting, focused, and caring.”

He also appreciated the opportunity to take dual credit classes through a program at MAS which allow students to earn college credit while still in high school. Malik says those courses will be beneficial as he continues his education.

Outside of school, Malik spends time going to the gym and editing videos. He also enjoys drawing, including drawing animations, and he sings in his free time. Malik says these activities help him express himself creatively while strengthening his future career-related skills.

Malik’s advice to incoming freshmen reflects both focus and balance. He encourages students to take high school seriously while also enjoying the experience. He also recommends paying close attention in math classes because he believes that foundation will be useful later.

One of the most important life lessons Malik says he learned in high school is accountability paired with the courage to ask for support.

“One of the most important life lessons I’ve learned in high school is that achieving your goals is your responsibility. While it’s important to be independent, it’s equally important to be brave enough to ask for help when you need it.”

Looking 10 years ahead, Malik plans to build a meaningful career as an editor and continue developing the skills he already has. He also plans to have a family, own a home, and stay on a path toward financial security.

Malik says he admires his grandmother because of her resilience and the guidance she continues to provide. He describes her as the person who keeps inspiring him to grow.

When he is dining out, Malik’s favorite restaurant is Panda Express. He especially enjoys ordering chow mein with orange chicken.

Malik expressed appreciation for teachers who made an impact on him, including Mr. Kyle, Ms. Anderson, Mr. Sapien, and Mr. Haynes, who he referred to as the GOAT (Greatest of All Time). Malik said he wants to see them succeed and wishes them well in the years ahead.

Malik Reese leaves MAS with clear plans and a creative drive that shows up in the work he enjoys most. As he heads toward film studies and a future in editing, he carries forward the lessons and relationships that shaped his years at MAS.
