Some days can feel overwhelming for high school students, Naomi Venegas says, and time has a way of changing how those days look in hindsight. She enrolled at Mission Achievement and Success Charter School in fall 2022, in the 9th grade, and she put that perspective to work while tackling dual college credit coursework and preparing for a future that includes attending a four-year university right here in New Mexico.

Naomi says the dual college credit program became one of the most important parts of her MAS experience. “It challenged me academically while also helping me feel prepared and confident about my future.” The program allows students to earn college credits while still in high school, and Naomi earned 18 college credits before graduation, the 7th most in the Class of 2026.

Naomi’s advice to incoming freshmen stays focused on effort and learning. She encourages students to take classes seriously, since the skills and knowledge gained in high school can open doors later.

“No matter how hard things get or how overwhelming they seem in the moment, they will eventually pass. Looking back, challenges often feel more manageable, and they teach you resilience and perspective.”

Outside of school, Naomi spends time reading and writing, and she listens to music. She also watches movies, enjoys being surrounded by family and friends, and tries new restaurants. She says these things help her relax while exploring what she enjoys. They also help her keep a steady rhythm as responsibilities add up.

Naomi will attend The University of New Mexico in the fall, where she will major in psychology. Ten years from now, she plans to work as a clinical psychologist. Her plans also include traveling to at least four different countries and becoming a published author. She also plans to get married.

As many of our students do, Naomi admires her mom and looks up to her. She says her mom has faced challenges and still does what needs doing to care for her children. Naomi says that determination and support continue to shape how she wants to move through life.

When she wants a go-to meal in town, Naomi heads to Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen (4865 Pan American West Freeway; Albuquerque, NM 87109). She orders the Buffalo Chicken Wrap, and she says it stays in her regular rotation.

Naomi also shared gratitude for the people who supported her along the way.

“I want to thank my family for all the sacrifices they have made to help me get here. I know I wouldn’t have done it without you. To my friends and teachers, you have all helped me grow and build meaningful connections throughout my school journey. School would not have been the same without you.”

Naomi Venegas Chavira has graduated from high school with clear plans and a steady approach to challenges. Everyone at MAS feels excited to see where her goals take her next.
