For many students, the structured environment at Mission Achievement and Success Charter School (MAS) helps identify and shape who they are and what they want to become, especially when they spend several years within the MAS community. And for graduating senior Samantha Hernandez, that structure helped strengthen her academic focus while also giving her the space to build friendships that mattered. She enrolled at MAS in the fall 2018 as a 5th grader and carried those experiences with her through graduation.

“What I liked most about attending MAS was the structured environment, which encouraged me to strive to be my best academically. I also value the friendships I’ve formed, as my friends have always supported me through both my ups and downs.”

One of the experiences Samantha points to with pride is her time as a cheerleader for the basketball team. She says being part of that role pushed her beyond her comfort zone and helped her connect with others in new ways, which also led to new friendships and personal growth.

When Samantha shares advice with incoming freshmen, she comes back to the importance of staying grounded in who you are while keeping school in focus.

“I would advise incoming freshmen to stay true to themselves, no matter the challenges they face. It’s also important to focus on academics, not just friendships, because both play a significant role in shaping their future.”

Samantha also reflects on what she learned about personal boundaries during high school. She says it can be appropriate to say no and not always agree with others, as long as it is done respectfully. She also learned the importance of voicing her opinions and staying true to her beliefs.

After high school, Samantha plans to attend New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, where she will major in sociology. After completing her studies there, she plans to continue her education at The University of New Mexico and eventually pursue a master’s degree in the field. Looking 10 years ahead, Samantha plans to be established in her career and in a financial position to help support her family. She also plans to live in Maine and adopt a child.

Outside of school, Samantha enjoys cooking and cleaning, and she also likes spending time with her pets. She says these activities bring comfort and independence, which she feels have contributed to her personal growth. When she is craving something that feels familiar, she says she loves homemade food, and her favorite dish is homemade Broccoli Cheddar Soup.

Samantha says she admires her grandmother, who studied to become a nurse while continuing to care for their family. She describes her grandmother’s perseverance and dedication as a lasting source of motivation.

Samantha also shared gratitude for the other people who supported her throughout the years, and she carries a simple motto forward.

“I am truly thankful for my family, friends, and teachers who supported me throughout my high school journey. Their encouragement made my time at MAS unforgettable and meaningful, and because of them, I am “always up, never down…””

The MAS community is proud of Samantha Hernandez and the growth she has shown over the years. We look forward to seeing the future she plans to build with an academic background in sociology and beyond.
