Sir Julius Davis is already looking ahead to a future that includes college basketball at the Division I level. After graduating from Mission Achievement and Success Charter School in May of this year, he plans to study fine arts and continue pursuing the game he loves. That vision has been taking shape since he enrolled at MAS in the Fall of 2018 as a 5th grader.

Sports played a major role in Sir Julius’s high school experience. He participated in soccer, flag football, and basketball, and he says those activities helped him stay in shape while also giving him a healthy outlet during difficult times. Reflecting on that part of his journey, Sir Julius shared that sports “were also a form of therapy for me as I coped with different life challenges.”

When Sir Julius thinks about what he liked best about attending MAS, he points to the support he received from teachers and the encouragement he felt from other students. He says MAS creates a positive environment for students who are serious about building a future. He also appreciated the unique opportunities the school provided, including being able to take college classes while still in high school through MAS’s dual credit program, hearing from different branches of the military, learning about financial aid, and getting guidance on how to reach the college of his choice.

His advice to incoming freshmen is direct and thoughtful.

“Do not slack off on your schoolwork, because once you fall behind it can be hard to catch up.”

He also recommends that students stay true to themselves and not let the opinions of others influence them in a negative way.

Outside of school, Sir Julius enjoys creating design ideas by making name tags for others and experimenting with doodle designs. He says those interests connect with one of his long-term plans, which is to own and operate a clothing brand in the future. He also enjoys playing sports with his younger brother. These activities help him relax and bring him closer to the people he cares about.

One of the most important life lessons Sir Julius says he learned in high school is the importance of staying true to who you are. As he put it:

“You should always try your best and stay positive, because focusing on negative things can lead you down the wrong path.”

He also says it is important not to let others change who you are.

After graduation, Sir Julius plans to attend Central New Mexico Community College, where he will major in fine arts. After completing his studies there, he plans to transfer to The University of New Mexico to continue advancing in the field. He also plans to pursue a place on the university’s basketball team.

Looking ten years ahead, Sir Julius sees himself having completed his college studies, working full-time, building his clothing brand, and owning a home to share with his wife and children.

Sir Julius says he admires his grandmother because she was passionate, kind-hearted, and open-minded. Her example made a lasting impression on him, and he says he wants to be like her.

When it comes to food, Sir Julius keeps it simple. Panda Express is his favorite place to eat, and his order usually includes lo mein with fried rice, plus orange chicken.

Sir Julius leaves MAS with a clear set of plans and the creativity to build something of his own. We expect that those qualities will continue to guide him as he moves toward college, playing NCAA Division I Basketball, and the future he has in mind.
