  • MAS Students
Mikal Belicove

Most high school students track the year by semesters, and by whatever holiday or school break is coming up next. At Mission Achievement and Success (MAS) Charter School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, sophomore Colden Edmo measures progress in seconds, including a personal best of 48 seconds on the Giant Slalom courses he races as a competitive downhill / alpine skier. A member of the Santa Fe Ski Team, Colden, 16, has already earned multiple Giant Slalom wins in his young career.

A student at MAS since Aug. 2015, when he enrolled as a 1st grader, Colden stays busy when the snow isn’t falling by competing in track and field, basketball, and cross country. In the fall of 2025, he consistently placed in the top three at cross-country meets, including one first-place finish, and finished third at the Albuquerque Charter League Championship Meet in late October. Meet Colden, in his own words…

MAS: MAS has been part of your story for a long time. When did you enroll, and who else in your family is on campus?

COLDEN: I started at MAS in Aug. 2015 as a 1st grader. Today, my siblings, Lily (kindergarten) and Jack (7th grade), are at MAS.

MAS: When did you start skiing, and what type of ski races do you compete in now?

COLDEN: I started skiing when I was 10, and I now compete in alpine ski racing, which is a high-speed, endurance-based sport where we ski downhill, racing against the clock while navigating through a series of tight gates. I’ve been a member of the Santa Fe Ski Team since 2020, and I now compete in the 16–18 age group in the US Ski & Snowboard Southern Series slalom race series.

MAS: What are you most proud of so far in skiing?

COLDEN: My fastest recorded time is 48 seconds on a Giant Slalom course. I’ve earned five alpine ski racing wins at Wolf Creek’s Giant Slalom in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Over the recent winter break, I trained at Sipapu Ski Resort in Vadito, New Mexico.

MAS: Cross country running is another area where you’ve stood out. How did your last high school season go?

COLDEN: During my 10th-grade season at MAS, I consistently placed in the top three in our fall 2025 cross-country meets, including one first-place finish. I also finished third at the Albuquerque Charter League Championship Meet.

MAS: What do you like best about attending MAS?

COLDEN: I appreciate how as a Choose Love Certified School, the school helps open our minds and encourages us to spread love and positivity. I enjoy participating in track and field, basketball, and cross country.

MAS: What advice would you give a student on their first day at our school?

COLDEN: Try to ignore any chaos and focus on yourself and the day ahead. Your teachers will give you tools that help with testing and real-life skills, so don’t get frustrated. Just stay focused and keep going.

MAS: Who is someone you admire, and why?

COLDEN: I admire Jackson Goldstone, a 21-year-old Canadian downhill mountain biker from British Columbia. He won the Junior Downhill title at the 2021 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships when we just 17, and the 2025 world championship in Switzerland. Seeing a young athlete reach that level inspires me to keep pushing myself. I also admire my Mom for the sacrifices she has made to help me get where I am today. She taught me discipline and motivated me to pursue what I love.

MAS: Fast-forward 10 years from now, where do you want to be in life?

COLDEN: I want to be a Red Bull-sponsored athlete in skiing and also be employed in the field of engineering.

MAS: Last question. What is your favorite food and/or restaurant?

COLDEN: My favorite food is Indian tacos (they’re made with fluffy, golden-brown frybread instead of a traditional tortilla, and topped with typical taco ingredients), and my favorite restaurant is Texas Steakhouse (two locations in Albuquerque: 5900 Pan American Fwy. and 10030 Coors Blvd. Bypass NW).
