Meet The Team — Mr. Zach Houchens, 2nd Grade Reading Mastery Teacher
- Meet The Team
This week, we’re shining the spotlight on an educator whose path to teaching began on the ballfields of Nebraska and now continues in the classrooms of MAS Old Coors. Meet Mr. Houchens, a first-generation college graduate, slow-pitch softball player, and proud member of our school community, in his own words….
MAS: Let’s start with your background. Where did you grow up, and what did you want to be when you were younger?
MR. HOUCHENS: I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, and originally wanted to work in athletics, specifically as an athletic director. I had some really inspirational coaches in high school who were deeply integrated into my education. I also played sport. I wrestled and played baseball (pitcher and middle infielder).
MAS: Can you tell us about your college experience?
MR. HOUCHENS: I earned my Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from Wayne State College in Nebraska in 2020. I was actually the first in my family to graduate from college, which was a big deal. I didn’t get to walk at graduation because of the health pandemic, and while that was a little disappointing, I’m very proud of that accomplishment.
MAS: How has being a first-generation college graduate shaped your perspective on teaching?
MR. HOUCHENS: It’s shaped a lot of how I approach my work. I was always taught to work hard now so you can enjoy life later, and that’s something I try to pass on to my students. My focus is on giving them all the tools and resources they need to succeed, and to be a trusted guide on their educational journey.
MAS: What do you enjoy most about teaching 2nd grade Reading Mastery?
MR. HOUCHENS: I love seeing students master and retain key concepts through the spiraling technique we use. Watching them grow into confident readers and knowing we’re helping prepare them for success in a competitive academic world, is incredibly rewarding.

MAS: What’s your teaching philosophy, and why does it resonate with MAS students?
MR. HOUCHENS: My philosophy is grounded in the belief that building relationships and trust is critical to student academic success. It’s also about connecting with kids and their families so we can have real conversations. That approach works with MAS’s student profile and helps create a space where kids can thrive.
MAS: What’s something important you want people to know about MAS?
MR. HOUCHENS: We have high expectations and a culture of success.
MAS: What’s something most people would be surprised to know about you?
MR. HOUCHENS: I love being outside and going to the lake during the summer, and I play on a slow-pitch softball team called ABQ Guns. I play outfield and middle infield.
MAS: Favorite MAS memory so far?
MR. HOUCHENS: Definitely meeting the MAS team and being welcomed into the culture. And the graduation event at the end of the year stands out; it’s such a powerful celebration of everything we’ve all worked for together.
MAS: Last question: What’s your favorite restaurant in town, and what’s your go-to dish?
MR. HOUCHENS: M’tucci’s. I like their chicken alfredo pasta.
