Meet The Team — Ms. Pearl Lauron, 3rd-Grade Test Prep Small-Group Teacher
- Meet The Team
This week we’re shining the MAS spotlight on an educator who is finishing her master’s degree in special education, loves to travel, and believes in steady, incremental growth in both her work and personal life. Meet Pearl, in her own words…
MAS: Let’s start with your background. Where did you grow up, and what did you imagine doing for work as an adult?
MS. LAURON: I grew up in Bantayan, a rural area in Kabankalan City, Philippines. My mom was a teacher and my dad a pastor, so I was helping with Sunday-school lessons by 5th grade. Honestly, I didn’t plan on becoming a teacher. I just knew I needed steady work and was encouraged to pursue education.
MAS: Tell us about your education and current studies.
MS. LAURON: I earned a Bachelor of Education with a concentration in Special Education from Carlos Hilado Memorial State College in 2013. I’ve finished all the coursework for a master’s in special education and am working on my thesis now.
MAS: You joined us here at MAS in July 2024. What’s your role on campus?
MS. LAURON: I’m the 3rd-Grade Test Prep Small-Group Teacher at the Old Coors campus. I work with targeted groups to build the skills and confidence they need for state testing and overall achievement and success.
MAS: What’s your teaching philosophy, especially given MAS’s student profile?
MS. LAURON: “A little progress is all that’s needed.” With many students, especially those who learn differently, small, consistent gains add up to big breakthroughs. Celebrating those steps keeps them motivated and ready for the next challenge.
MAS: What do you think sets MAS apart?
MS. LAURON: MAS is a place to grow. We’re serious about behavior management and a culture of achievement because we’re preparing students for life after high school; we’re preparing them for their choices in college, careers, and service.
MAS: What might surprise people about you?
MS. LAURON: People see me as conservative, but I grew up with three older brothers, so I love cartoons, anime, cars, and I collect sneakers. I’ve visited 14 states so far (Tennessee is my favorite) and I plan to hit all 50 before June of 2028.
MAS: Last question: where’s your go-to restaurant in Albuquerque, and what’s the must-order dish?
MS. LAURON: iGrill Korean BBQ & Hotpot (3700 Ellison Dr. NW Suite C; Albuquerque, NM 87114). I go back for the bulgogi (that's a Korean dish with thinly sliced, marinated beef, typically cooked on a grill or in a pan).
