With more than two decades of experience in education, family engagement, and personal development, Pam Kissoondyal brings a unique blend of empathy, expertise, and global perspective to her role as Vice Chair of the MAS Charter School Governing Board. She currently serves as a Family Engagement Coordinator at the University of Florida (Gainesville, Fl.), where she supports families of children with complex needs through advocacy, coaching, and inclusive practices. A certified life coach and trainer, she believes deeply in the power of partnership and lifelong learning. Meet Pam, in her own words…

Pam Kissoondyal, MAS Board Vice Chair

MAS: Let’s start at the beginning… what motivated you to serve on the MAS Board?

PAM KISSOONDYAL: I’m deeply passionate about education and ensuring that every student, especially those with unique learning needs, has the support to thrive. As a parent and a professional in facilitation and personal development, I wholeheartedly align with MAS’s mission to empower students through an exceptional and engaging college-preparatory education.

MAS: What’s been most inspiring about your time on the Board so far?

PAM KISSOONDYAL: Serving on the Board is both an opportunity to learn and a privilege to contribute my experience in a meaningful way. It’s inspiring to witness MAS continually raising the bar while fostering a strong sense of community. Our founder and CEO (JoAnn Mitchell) leads by example and embodies Mark Twain’s words: “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” At MAS, the curriculum is about both educational and academic requirements and preparing students with the skills and confidence to succeed in any environment, from the classroom to the boardroom.

MAS: Tell us a bit about your career path. Where did it all begin?

PAM KISSOONDYAL: My path has been anything but traditional. I started as a medical and dental assistant, became a Montessori teacher, and later continued my education in Early Childhood Education at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, Canada.

MAS: How did that lead to your current work in coaching and family engagement?

PAM KISSOONDYAL: Eventually, I evolved into a life coach, but my greatest education has come from life itself. Every experience, challenge, and connection teaches me something new. That curiosity and commitment to growth have shaped everything I do.

MAS: Where did you grow up, and what did you want to be as a kid?

PAM KISSOONDYAL: I grew up in the co-operative Republic of Guyana, which is a country on the northern coast of South America. Even at 12, I knew I wanted to make a difference, whether in education or healthcare. Life took me through Canada and then to the U.S., shaping my path in ways I never expected. I’ve come to understand that just as I help others grow, I’m always evolving myself. Empathy and connection have been my compass, no matter where life takes me.

MAS: You’ve completed a number of trainings. What have those experiences meant to you?

PAM KISSOONDYAL: I’m always eager to learn and grow, both personally and professionally. Over the years, I’ve embraced countless opportunities for development, including True Colors Elite Training, advanced facilitation, and leadership programs designed to uplift individuals and organizations. Every experience has deepened my passion for empowering others and making a meaningful impact.

MAS: What do you think sets MAS apart from other schools?

PAM KISSOONDYAL: MAS is more than a school with two campuses. It’s a family. It’s a place where students, educators, and leaders are supported, empowered, and encouraged to reach their highest potential. At MAS, we believe in the power of community, high expectations, and unwavering support to help every student succeed. When we lift each other up, amazing things happen.

MAS: Tell us about your current role at the University of Florida.

PAM KISSOONDYAL: I serve as a Family Engagement Coordinator at both the University of Florida Center for Autism and Related Disabilities and the university’s Florida & Virgin Islands (FAVI) Deaf-Blind Collaborative. My work focuses on supporting families, especially those navigating complex special needs, and collaborating with professionals to foster inclusive, empowering environments. I also work as a trainer and certified life coach, helping others build tools for growth, resilience, and success.

MAS: What’s something most people would be surprised to learn about you?

PAM KISSOONDYAL: People are often surprised that, despite my experience as a public speaker and facilitator, I’m naturally more of an observer. I love meaningful conversations, but I also value quiet moments to recharge and reflect. That said, I’m always ready with a joke, even if I’m the only one laughing.

MAS: Last question… what’s your favorite restaurant and go-to dish?

PAM KISSOONDYAL: Ah, one of my favorite topics — food! Pappadeaux. Rainbow trout and shrimp, with cheesecake to go. No matter how tempting the menu, I always stick with my favorite. Why mess with perfection? Besides, I like to think of it as a lifelong commitment to good food.
