MEET THE TEAM: PRINCESS SUNDO-YAZZIE, M.Ed., MAS Director of Science and Science Instructional Coach

  • Meet The Team
Mikal Belicove

New role, familiar face. Since joining Team MAS in late-2020, Mrs. Sundo-Yazzie has taught 8th grade science, 11th grade physics, and 10th & 11th grade chemistry and now supports all of our science teachers as the director of science and full-time science instructional coach. An avid rock climber whose stepdaughter is a nationally ranked climber, she blends deep content knowledge with practical coaching that helps our science teachers advance their classroom practices while improving student outcomes.

Meet Mrs. Sundo-Yazzie, in her own words…

MAS: Let’s start at the very beginning… Where did you grow up, and what inspired your interest in science?

Mrs. Sundo-Yazzie: I grew up in Cagayan de Oro City on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. From a young age I loved science books, encyclopedias, and documentaries. I dreamed of becoming a biologist and contributing to research that drives discovery and innovation. Being in the United States feels like a meaningful step toward that dream.

MAS: Where did you work before MAS?

Mrs. Sundo-Yazzie: My first job after college was as a physics tutor for students in grades 7–12. I later taught college-level astronomy, Chemistry I, Physics I, and biology in 2015. From 2016 to 2020 I taught and developed science curriculum for grades 7–12 with the Department of Education, Region X, in the Philippines. I then moved abroad and found my home at MAS, teaching grades 6–12 science beginning in 2020 and coaching from 2024 to the present.

MAS: Tell us about your education.

Mrs. Sundo-Yazzie: I earned a bachelor’s in secondary education with a major in physical sciences from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in April 2014. I completed a master’s in science education from St. Dominic Savio College in 2022.

MAS: What are your top priorities for the 2025–2026 school year?

Mrs. Sundo-Yazzie: To learn and grow. My commitment to continuous improvement is unwavering. I am focused on building the training and skills that help me coach teachers to deliver high-quality lessons that lead to stronger student outcomes. The goal is simple... strengthen my practice so teacher excellence leads to student success.

MAS: What do you want people to know about MAS?

Mrs. Sundo-Yazzie: MAS is a true learning community where no teacher, student, or team member is left behind. Every educator is equipped with tools, training, and support to grow and lead, and we work together to inspire excellence, nurture curiosity, and make a lasting impact on every learner.

MAS: What might surprise people about you?

Mrs. Sundo-Yazzie: I can rock climb. I discovered it after meeting my husband, and it quickly became a favorite way to challenge myself and enjoy the outdoors. My stepdaughter, Akemi, has been climbing since she was four. She is a member of USA Climbing and competes at the national level. She has consistently qualified for Nationals and is one of three athletes from Team Mojo representing New Mexico.

MAS: Last question… What’s your favorite restaurant and go-to order?

Mrs. Sundo-Yazzie: Rio Tacos (4545 Alameda Blvd NE; Albuquerque) is my go-to taco spot in Albuquerque. I love their asada tacos and their burritos.
